Specialty applications

Need a specialised solution?

What is FDM?

The workhorse for tough, repeatable parts.

Fused deposition modelling melts a thermoplastic filament and lays it down in thin beads, one layer welded onto the last, until the part is built. Because it prints in the same materials parts are moulded from — PETG, ABS, ASA, nylon, polycarbonate — what comes off the machine behaves like a real component rather than a model of one.

That makes it the workhorse for functional prototypes, jigs and fixtures, housings, and low-volume production, and the cheapest route by some margin once parts get large or quantities climb. The trade-off is resolution: layers are visible and fine detail is limited. Need sharp features, a smooth finish, or watertight and clear parts? See SLA →

How it works

File to finished part in four steps.

1

Upload & quote

Drop in a STEP or STL. Choose material, layer height and quantity, and we send a firm price.

2

Print on the farm

Your job is queued across our multi-printer farm in the filament you chose.

3

Post-process

Supports removed and parts checked — with optional sanding and finishing.

4

Finish & ship

Packed and on its way, or ready for local pickup in Kitchener–Waterloo.

SLA, FDM or SLS?

Not sure which process you need?

A quick, honest comparison — we offer all three, so we have no reason to push you toward one.

Choose SLA

  • Fine detail and smooth surfaces matter
  • Part must be watertight or optically clear
  • Small, intricate geometry
  • Flexible or elastic material needed
  • Cosmetic, paint-ready finish
See our SLA page →

Choose FDM This page

  • Larger parts, or a lot of them
  • Lowest cost per part is the priority
  • Engineering filaments — CF-nylon, ASA, PC, PPS
  • Rugged functional prototypes and fixtures
  • Outdoor or high-temperature service

Choose SLS

  • Strong parts with no support marks
  • Complex internal geometry or moving assemblies
  • Near-isotropic strength in every direction
  • Small production runs in nylon
  • Living hinges and snap-fits that must survive
See our SLS page →
Common questions

FDM printing, answered.

How much does FDM 3D printing cost?
FDM is priced by material used, print time, layer height and quantity, with a setup fee per order. Upload your file for an exact price, usually within one business day — FDM is usually the most cost-effective option for larger parts and higher quantities, and volume discounts apply automatically.
How strong are FDM parts?
Very — in the right material. PETG, ABS, ASA, polycarbonate and carbon-fibre nylon produce durable, functional, end-use parts. We can orient and tune the print for strength where your part needs it most.
What's the biggest part you can print?
Our standard build volume is 350 × 320 × 325mm; larger geometry goes to our large-format machines (up to 1000mm) or is printed in sections and bonded.
Will I see layer lines?
FDM has visible layer lines by nature. We can reduce them with finer layer heights, and offer sanding, priming and painting for a smooth finish. For fine detail straight off the printer, consider SLA.
Which materials do you stock, and can you get others?
We stock 10+ filaments including PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, polycarbonate, nylon, and carbon-fibre nylon — these print same-week. Beyond that we can source specialty and high-performance grades on request (PEEK, PEI/ULTEM, flame-retardant, ESD-safe), plus custom colour matching for branded parts.
How fast can I get FDM parts, and do you ship?
Standard lead time is 1–3 days. We ship across Ontario and Canada-wide, with local pickup available at our Kitchener shop. Rush options are available depending on current queue.
Can you do production batches?
Yes — our multi-printer farm is built for repeatable batch and bridge production. See batch & bridge production for ongoing runs.
