What is SLA?

When you need detail that FDM can't reach.

Stereolithography (SLA) cures liquid resin layer by layer with a laser, producing parts with far finer detail and smoother surfaces than filament printing. It's the right call for small intricate geometry, watertight enclosures, optically clear parts, and anything where surface finish matters straight off the printer.

We run a Formlabs Form 4BL with a full resin library on hand, so most jobs go straight to print without a material order. Parts are washed and UV-cured in-house, with tiered finishing from a basic clean-up to a full cosmetic polish.

SLA, FDM or SLS?

Not sure which process you need?

A quick, honest comparison — we offer all three, so we have no reason to push you toward one.

Choose SLA This page

  • Fine detail and smooth surfaces matter
  • Part must be watertight or optically clear
  • Small, intricate geometry
  • Flexible or elastic material needed
  • Cosmetic, paint-ready finish

Choose FDM

  • Larger parts, or a lot of them
  • Lowest cost per part is the priority
  • Engineering filaments — CF-nylon, ASA, PC, PPS
  • Rugged functional prototypes and fixtures
  • Outdoor or high-temperature service
See our FDM page →

Choose SLS

  • Strong parts with no support marks
  • Complex internal geometry or moving assemblies
  • Near-isotropic strength in every direction
  • Small production runs in nylon
  • Living hinges and snap-fits that must survive
See our SLS page →
Common questions

SLA printing, answered.

How much does SLA 3D printing cost?
SLA is priced by print time, resin volume, and finish level, with a setup fee per order. Upload your file for an exact price, usually within one business day — flexible resins and full-polish finishing carry a surcharge, and volume discounts apply automatically on larger runs.
How accurate are SLA parts?
Typical dimensional tolerance is around ±0.1mm depending on geometry and resin, with layer heights as fine as 25µm for high-detail work.
What's the largest part you can print in SLA?
The Form 4BL build volume handles most single parts; larger geometry can be split and bonded, or moved to our large-format FDM machines. Send your file and we'll advise the best route.
Do you offer biocompatible or medical (BioMed) resins?
Yes — we have full biocompatible capability. We print in Formlabs BioMed resins (including BioMed Amber and BioMed Clear) for medical, device, and surgical-guide applications, with grades rated for skin and short-term body contact and suitable for autoclave sterilisation. We work extensively with medtech clients and incubators, and can source the specific BioMed grade your application requires — talk to us about your requirements.
Can you match a custom colour?
Yes — alongside our stocked colours we can colour-match resin for branded or production parts, and paint to a specified colour after printing. Send us your colour reference and we’ll advise the best route.
Can SLA parts be painted or finished?
Yes — white and clear resins take paint and polish beautifully. We offer tiered finishing from a basic clean-up to a smooth, paint-ready or optically clear surface.
How fast can I get SLA parts, and do you ship?
Standard lead time is 2–4 days. We ship across Ontario and Canada-wide, with local pickup available at our Kitchener shop. Rush options are available on request depending on current queue.
Do you do one-off prototypes or only batches?
Both. There's no minimum — order a single prototype or a repeatable batch, and volume pricing kicks in automatically as quantities grow.
